NJ Sisters Receive Everyday Young Hero Award For Exemplary Community Service

This week, YSA recognized Lily Liu (16) and Maggie Liu (15) of New Providence, NJ as an Everyday Young Hero for their passion, creativity, and commitment to providing and promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions to tennis ball disposal!

Lily and Maggie Liu’s work has had a huge impact on their community. In August 2022, Lily and Maggie founded their non-profit Net Love to reduce the amount of tennis balls that end up in landfills each year. To do so, the girls have partnered with local tennis clubs and recreation centers to host ball drop bins across northern New Jersey. Their website even includes an interactive section, where people can find a drop off point, report a full bin, and request a bin or used tennis balls. To date, Net Love has collected, repurposed, and recycled 25,488 tennis balls! They’ve also expanded their reach to include bins in Miami, Florida and Orinda, California.

“We know that young people are uniquely suited to help solve problems – if given the opportunity,” said Steven A. Culbertson, president of YSA. “Today’s social and environmental problems are immense; we need youth in this country to be leaders and problem solvers today, not just the leaders of a distant tomorrow.”

The Everyday Young Hero award recognizes young people who are actively engaged in serving their communities and acting as a role model to other potential change makers. It is a chance to shine a spotlight on Everyday Young Heroes in our communities who would otherwise go unnoticed. To see and learn about YSA’s Everyday Young Heroes visit www.YSA.org/awards/eyh.
